"It burned their mouths and throats." An Alaskan elementary school serves floor sealer instead of milk for breakfast

A dozen elementary school children consumed floor caulking after it was served instead of milk at a breakfast program in Alaska, school officials said Wednesday.

Children attending a care program at Sitʼ Eeti Shaanáx̱ Glacier Valley Elementary School in Juneau received the sealant Tuesday, the school district said in a statement.

Shortly after an outside company, NANA Management Services, served breakfast at 8:45 am, children began complaining that the milk tasted bad and burned their mouths and throats, according to the release.

School and company personnel discovered that it was “actually a floor sealer that resembled liquid milk,” according to the statement.

"The staff immediately instructed the students to stop using the substance and removed it," they explained.

A school official immediately contacted poison control and alerted the parents, according to the statement.

Of the 12 children who consumed the sealant, one required medical treatment and two were picked up from school.

They may have sought medical help, according to the statement.

The status of those students is unknown.

The attention program is for students from 5 to 12 years old.

The remainder of the sealant was removed from the school and placed in a hazardous storage facility, according to the release.

It was not immediately clear how the mix-up occurred.

Superintendent Bridget Weiss told The Associated Press that the Juneau Police Department is conducting an investigation "not because we think there is anything criminal or malicious going on right now, but we want a thorough investigation of what happened." how it happened."

The milk and sealant were stored at an outside facility, and boxes containing large bags of each were moved on the same pallet, he told the AP.

"We don't know how it happened," he said, according to the AP.

"That pallet was delivered, and the assumption was that it was milk because that's what we thought was being delivered," she added.

The Juneau Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anchorage-based NANA Management Services said in a statement that after learning of the incident, the company immediately dispatched a security team to the state capital.

"We are conducting a thorough investigation that will look at all the factors that have contributed to what happened and identify possible security measures," the company said.
