Against all odds: Bennett prepares for the most challenging week since the formation of the government Israel today

2022-06-16T13:51:32.469Z

Despite the rebellious MKs and the tight schedule for passing the Judea and Samaria regulations, the Prime Minister and Lapid will try to take advantage of a few loopholes to pass at least the summer session • The alternatives in Bennett's eyes are much worse than the existence of a lame coalition

The Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, agreed with the Deputy Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, that despite the very difficult situation of the coalition, they will continue to fight for its continued existence until the last minute.

Next week the two will try to make it through the most challenging week for the coalition since its inception.

Bennett does not intend to lay down the keys until there are others who will drop him.

The schedule for the next two weeks is very tight: on Monday, the Knesset is supposed to approve the Judea and Samaria Regulations Law on first reading, but at the moment there is no solution that will usually lead to the law being approved. This depends on the decision of MK Nir Orbach (right) who has not yet announced how he will act.

The following Monday, June 27, the coalition will once again be allowed to pass the Judiciary Regulations Law, but if they fail this time as well, the schedule may be too tight to impossible. The law is through the dissolution of the Knesset, and the question of whether the time frame for dissolving the Knesset that will begin only after next Monday will be sufficient to complete the legislation by June 30.

The Prime Minister is aware of the difficulties and that he may soon reach the end of his career as Prime Minister.

He is aware that if Auerbach and his right-wing MK MK Idit Silman vote in favor of dissolving the Knesset in the third reading, Yair Lapid will enter the prime minister's office immediately.

Attempts have so far failed to remove from the Knesset MKs Rinwai Zoabi from Meretz and Mazen Ghanaim from Ra'am, who refuse to support the Judea and Samaria regulations, and make room for those next in line to support.

The attempt to persuade Nir Orbach to return to the coalition also apparently failed.

The alternatives for the survival of the government with the challenging coalition are worse in Bennett's view - another election campaign or a right-wing government led by Netanyahu in which Itamar Ben Gvir will also be a member.

He is unwilling to rate these options and which of the two options he would prefer to the extent that his government ceases to exist, believing both to be equally bad.

In a video he distributed to his activists, Bennett called these two options "the three" houses, "an acronym for elections, Bibi and Ben Gvir.

Although the options for getting out of the crisis and getting through the summer session seem very limited, there are still a few small loopholes through which Bennett and Lapid could try to get through.

One possibility is to get the rebellious Knesset members from the left to support the Judea and Samaria regulations. Orbach not to support the dissolution of the Knesset or to delay the legislative process in the Knesset committee headed by him, in order to pass the summer session even without the approval of the Judea and Samaria regulations.

Currently the chances of success of these options seem low.
