Twelve elementary school students drank floor sealant thinking it was milk after it was served to them at a summer program in Juneau, Alaska on Tuesday, the school district reports.


Students in the summer nursery program at Sitʼ Eeti Shaanáx̱-Glacier Valley Elementary School complained about the taste of the milk they were served as part of the program's included breakfast, stating that it tasted bad and made their stomachs burn. mouth and throat, the Juneau School District said in a statement Wednesday.

Breakfast was served on trays by a third-party contractor, NANA Management Services (NMS), around 8:45 am Tuesday and the children carried the trays to cafeteria tables to eat, according to the release.

School district and NMS staff “immediately took action by smelling/tasting the milk and checking the container label,” after the children complained. floor that appeared to be liquid milk. Staff immediately instructed students to stop consuming the liquid and removed it."

The supervisor of RALLY, the summer program, contacted the poison control center and alerted the parents, according to the release, and "the steps indicated by the poison control center were carefully followed."

RALLY offers state-licensed childcare services for elementary students ages 5 to 12 and is a partnership with the Juneau School District, according to the district's website.

One student received medical treatment at a nearby hospital, and two other students were picked up from school "and may have gone to seek medical advice," the statement said.

The status of those students and the remaining nine children was not included in the statement.

An investigation into how the incident occurred is ongoing and includes involvement from the school district, NMS, the city and township of Juneau, and the Juneau Police Department, according to the statement, which did not specify who is leading the investigation.

In a separate statement Thursday, NMS said it sent its security team to Juneau as soon as it became aware of the incident, "and leadership is on its way to Juneau now."

"We are supporting the full investigation, examining all the factors that contribute to determining exactly what happened. This process is key to identifying possible security measures and putting them into practice," says the SMN statement.
