American Initiative: Reduce US Funding for UN If Israel Investigation Continues | Israel today

2022-06-16T01:09:13.312Z

Dozens of U.S. elected officials promote bipartisan legislation for Israel • Objective: To dismantle UN Human Rights Council inquiry into Operation Wall Guard • Greg Stubby, a lawmaker who promotes the law, said: "American taxpayer money should not be funded Anti-Israel Committee "

A bipartisan legislative initiative in Congress calls for the dismantling of the UN Human Rights Council's commission of inquiry into the Wall Guard operation and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In recent weeks, a relatively large number of members of the House of Representatives have signed the bill, which was initiated in March by Republican Greg Stobby of Florida and Democrat Vincent Gonzalez of Texas.

Stobi was joined by 33 other members, including seven from the Democratic Party.

The proposal states that the official policy of the United States will be to act to dismantle the commission of inquiry and to combat "systematic anti-Israel bias in the UN Human Rights Council and other international forums."

In addition, as stated, it stipulates that US budgeting for the UN will be cut as a means of pressure to achieve these goals.

"Harm to the prospect of peace"

The United States is the largest sponsor of the United Nations and alone is responsible for more than 20% of the organization's budget, although it has more than 190 other member states.

The proposed model for "budgetary punishment" of the UN already exists in the framework of previous legislation passed by Congress, regarding other UN bodies that acted in a systematic bias against Israel.

"The standing committee set up by the UN Human Rights Council, which does not enjoy trust, directly harms the prospects for peace in the Middle East and deliberately attacks the only democracy in the region," Stubby said

Extensive opposition to the report

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said this month in the House of Representatives that the United States had not been able to prevent the establishment of a commission of inquiry, but it did work to cut its budget by 25 percent.

The 18-page report of the UN Commission of Inquiry devotes only a few paragraphs to the thousands of rockets and other terrorist acts of Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, and even so, almost without specifying concrete details about them.

Beyond this brief mention, almost entirely focuses on Israel.

He raises unfounded allegations of discrimination and racism that allegedly led to the outbreak of riots in the cities involved, and focuses on IDF activity in the Gaza Strip in a way that is often detached from the context that led to it.

The United States condemned the report's findings, calling it "one-sided and biased against Israel."

In addition, the United States is leading an initiative in which 22 countries have already signed a document opposing the activities of the Human Rights Council's Commission of Inquiry.
