For many, clover in the lawn is a weed and an indication that the lawn is lacking in nutrients.

You can deliver these to the grass with coffee grounds.

Munich – It is a bee pasture and a symbol of good luck, but often also a sign that something is wrong with the soil quality of the lawn: clover.

Many perceive it as a weed, but do not want to attack the plant with chemicals.

Coffee grounds are the perfect way to use leftovers to naturally remove clover from the meadow.

White clover, mountain trefoil and yellow sweet clover like calcareous soil and can multiply well in a nutrient-poor meadow.

Coffee grounds can be put to good use in the garden by driving these weeds out of your lawn: they deprive them of the basis for their growth and also give the grass a chance to hold its own against the clover.

Because coffee grounds are a natural fertilizer for the lawn, they contain potassium, phosphorus and, above all, a lot of nitrogen, which the grass needs.

It also has tannins that lower the pH of the soil.

Therefore, with a little patience, you have a good chance of getting rid of the clover in the lawn.

Horn clover and red clover are often more stubborn and may need to be removed by hand.

Spread coffee grounds on the lawn as fertilizer

To get your lawn in shape in the garden and remove the weeds, you can fertilize the green with coffee grounds about every four to six weeks.

However, do not use fresh, damp coffee residues for this.

Here's how to do it right:

  • Spread the coffee grounds out on a tray and let them air dry, as they mold quickly

  • Mow the lawn and spread the coffee grounds evenly over the lawn, i.e. about a handful or 50 grams per square meter

  • Water the lawn if rain is not imminent

You should not use coffee grounds for wood sorrel because, as its name suggests, it loves acidic soil and would even react with more growth.

By measuring the pH of the soil, you can prevent acidification of the lawn.

If you use coffee grounds as fertilizer in the garden, be aware that some plants, such as lavender, peonies or hydrangeas, do not like it.

Here, regular mowing, watering and scarifying are alternative measures to combat clover.
