A Dutch tourist was killed in an attack by gunmen on a Brazilian drug trafficker at a restaurant in the southern town of Leticia, in the Colombian Amazon, police said Thursday.

Gunmen on motorcycles killed Celso Caldas de Lima and injured two other Brazilians, police said in a statement.

During the

"attack"

, a Dutch woman who was seated nearby was injured and died of her injuries in hospital.

Asked by AFP, a police official said that the European national was sightseeing in Leticia.

Celso Caldas de Lima was arrested five years ago in Colombia during an operation by the security forces against drug trafficking.

He was then accused of establishing links between the Clan del Golfo, the most powerful Colombian cartel, and La Familia do norte, one of the largest criminal organizations in the Amazon.

He was wanted by Interpol for drug trafficking, homicide, racketeering.

The police did not say why he was at large.

Colombia and Brazil have a common border of 1,600 km through which circulates cocaine manufactured by the Colombian cartels, according to the authorities.

Colombia is the largest producer and exporter of this drug in the world.
