Heat wave: what is the "heat feather" that causes temperatures to rise?

2022-06-16T14:58:41.687Z

France is facing a heat plume which has an impact on the rise in mercury. The 40° mark will be exceeded.

The expression "heat feather" may contain a certain sweetness, yet it is this which is at the origin of the rise in temperatures (which will continue to rise in the coming hours), to exceed in some places the 40 °C in the shade.

But if we had already heard of "heat dome", one of which was installed in France last month, the "heat feather" is rarer.

It differs from the first by its dynamism.

When, under a heat dome, the hot air is blocked on the same territory – in Canada, a heat dome had pulled the temperatures to nearly 50 ° C for several days, even causing the fire of the village of Lytton – a feather of heat moves gently, like a feather or a blowtorch which would suddenly bring a blow of heat.

The situation is more bearable since the atmosphere is more ventilated, less hot, and the phenomenon lasts a priori less long.

The heat plume, which can also be described as a "heat plume" and which is currently causing temperatures to rise in France, comes from south of the Sahara.

It was pushed by violent winds, then towed north by a cold drop phenomenon located off the Iberian Peninsula, to reach Spain, then our lands.

The heat will increase on Friday afternoon throughout the country, and “40°C will be frequently reached or even exceeded over a large south-west quarter, with possible monthly heat records”, notes Météo France.
