It is well known that cigarette butts and broken glass can cause forest fires.

But what about parked cars?

Munich - It's getting hot in the Free State, the summer will really turn on in the next few days.

It's the perfect weather for sunbathers - but not for nature.

Because of the drought in Bavaria, the risk of forest and meadow fires increases sharply at the weekend.

Observation flights are therefore planned in Franconia to look out for possible fires.

Heat wave in Bavaria: risk of forest fires increases

The risk of forest and meadow fires is high to very high in many places in Bavaria at the weekend.

Upper and Lower Franconia are particularly affected.

This was announced by a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD).

"Where the danger index is highest, the drought is also greatest." In Franconia, it has recently rained little, and nothing will change in the next few days.

At the weekend, temperatures in Bavaria often rise to 30 degrees, and even 36 degrees are possible in the Lower Main.

It is true that heat is not a direct trigger of fires, which can also occur in severe drought in winter.

"But when it's hot, the top layer of soil is extremely dry, so a small spark is enough," the meteorologist continued.

High risk of wildfires in Bavaria: cigarette butts or broken glass can cause fires

If you want to use the high summer temperatures on Saturday and Sunday for excursions into nature, you have to be particularly careful.

"Even a spark or a discarded cigarette butt can ignite grass, needle litter and branches lying on the ground and cause a serious fire," warned the government of Upper Franconia.

But not only a fag stick flicked into nature is taboo when there is a risk of fire in the Free State.

"A carelessly discarded bottle or broken glass can focus solar radiation and cause a fire," said the DWD meteorologist.

Danger of forest fires: A car parked in a meadow can cause a fire

What many probably don't have on their radar: If you park your car in meadows or forest paths, you can also accidentally cause a fire - for example due to an overheated exhaust.

In order to keep an eye out for possible causes of fire and fires, the governments in Upper and Lower Franconia have announced observation flights from Thursday to Sunday.

At the weekend, Middle Franconia is also sending observers into the air as a precaution.
