Almog will have to get the support of nine of the ten members of the committee in order to be elected to the position.

The selection committee for the chairmanship of the Jewish Agency is expected to convene today (Thursday) and it is possible that it will elect Maj. Gen. Doron Almog as the next chairman of the Jewish Agency.

It is estimated that Almog is the leading candidate for the position, but Almog will have to get the support of nine of the ten members of the committee to be elected to the position.

Another name that came up as a candidate for the position is that of Pnina Temano-Sheta, Minister of Aliyah and Absorption, but it seems that 71-year-old Doron Almog, who was General of the Southern Command, winner of the Israel Prize for Special Contribution to Society and State, Chairman of the Adi Negev-Nahalat Rehabilitation Village Eran, will receive the necessary majority and will be elected chairman of the Jewish Agency.

If a new chairman of the Jewish Agency is elected today, his election will be approved by the Jewish Agency's Board of Trustees, which will convene next month in Jerusalem.

It will be recalled that after the election of Yitzhak Herzog, who was chairman of the Jewish Agency, as President of the State of Israel about a year ago, no candidate was found who received the support of the members of the selection committee.

During the past year, Yaakov Hagoel, chairman of the World Zionist Organization, has also served as acting chairman of the Jewish Agency until a permanent chairman is found.
