In the video: Agricultural crime intensifies: "enormous damage" (Photo: Shaul Hefetz)

Last Saturday, Shaul Hefetz from Moshav Nitzanei Oz in Sharon was forced to dedicate to the pursuit of thieves who came to his fields to steal hay.

"Before I have enough to conquer the hay for packages, they come with cars and pitchforks, load and flee," Hefetz said.

He managed to catch the criminals and called a police force to the scene who arrested the suspects for questioning.

He said they had already been released to their homes and he would not be surprised if he met them again in his fields.

Hefetz's father is one of the founders of the moshav, which was established as a Nahal holding in 1951. Shaul was born in the moshav 52 years ago and continued his father's career as a farmer. The Fields In recent years most of the damage has been caused by ATV drivers who trample the fields after they have started to germinate.

He says that the members of the New Guard organization help him guard the fields.

"They allow me to sleep for a few hours a night," he said.

"I am 52 years old and what I know to do is grow hay, I do not know anything else. Although it is difficult and despite dealing with the vulnerability, I will not leave my fields and continue to fight criminals. A person should be connected to his land," he said.

B., a tower from the south, told how in recent years goods worth hundreds of thousands of shekels have been stolen from him.

"They would come to the fields every weekend, and at night they would come in and pick me up in commercial quantities. In fact, what I grow was stolen from me. For the past year I have been guarding it so that it will not be stolen from me. Five years ago I would complain to the police. One does nothing. "

D., a tower in the western Negev region, said that he also suffers from theft in large quantities.

"I go into greenhouses and just fill bags of tomatoes. These are tons of goods that I grow all year. These are tens of thousands of dollars in damage a year. I have placed a guard for the last two years. I myself sometimes in the middle of the night do patrols and sleep in the field despite the guard. Every month thousands of shekels because of agricultural crime. "
