The representative of Reporters Without Borders in Turkey, Erol Onderoglu, confirmed that the Turkish regime today extended the detention of 16 journalists in Diyarbakir, in the south of the country.
"This leads to the belief that there is a pre-election maneuver by the regime to block the way for the opponents and deprive them of any means of expressing their opinions," Onderoglu was quoted by AFP as saying.
Twenty journalists working for media and companies close to the Turkish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) were arrested on the eighth of this month after Erdogan's regime accused them of "belonging to a terrorist organization."
Since then, they have been placed in pretrial detention, and 16 of them have been imprisoned today, including Serdar Altan, the co-chair of the Journalists' Association and a lawyer for journalists, while the rest were released and placed under judicial supervision.
