(CNN Spanish) --

This Sunday, June 19, Colombian voters vote to elect the president and vice president of the country for the period 2022-2026.

A common question among citizens before the elections is: will there be a dry law in Colombia during the presidential elections?

The dry law (a measure that restricts the sale and distribution of alcohol in public places) and the closure of borders are two actions that are taken days before the election.

According to the criteria to prohibit and restrict the sale and consumption of intoxicating beverages, it is a "preventive and temporary" measure aimed at "maintaining or restoring public order."

This is what the law says.

Yes, there is dry law.

From and until when?

The sale and consumption of intoxicating beverages will be prohibited throughout the national territory from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022, as announced by the Ministry of the Interior.

What happens if someone breaks the rule?

According to decree 979 of the Ministry of the Interior, issued for this second round, violations of the dry law "will be subject to corrective measures by mayors and police inspectors and station commanders, in accordance with the provisions of the National Police Code and Coexistence".

Sanctions include fines and temporary suspensions for establishments.

If there is a dry law, is there a curfew?

Until the time of publication of this article, the Government of Colombia did not decree a curfew for the national territory.

However, governors or mayors "may decree a curfew in order to prevent possible disturbances of public order."
