Former US President Donald Trump is currently debating whether to announce his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election before or after the midterm congressional elections, the US news network CNN reported today (Thursday).
"Announcing his candidacy in the midterm elections will allow him to be alone on the playing field without other Republicans, ensure the support of his donor base and leverage a possible Republican Party victory in the midterm elections," a former presidential campaigner close to him told the news network.
In contrast, many Trump allies in the Republican Party fear that announcing a candidacy could adversely affect the party's efforts to win a by-election that is often overwhelming in both houses of Congress.
More than a dozen of his closest allies told CNN on the condition of secrecy that they advised him to wait with the opening of his election campaign until next year.

So far no official announcement has been made by the former president, but from Trump's past conduct, much of the manpower recruitment process has been done in the immediate circle of members, away from the media.
Trump's entourage fears a possible candidacy for the charismatic Florida Gov. Ron de Santis, who many see as an "improved version" of the former president holding positions that represent the deep right in the United States, but is younger and more energetic.
