“Thank you Mr. Zelensky for accepting my invitation to participate in the G7 summit”, which will be held from June 26 to 28 in the castle complex of Elmau, in southern Germany, wrote on Twitter Olaf Scholz.

It has not been specified whether Volodymyr Zelensky, who has not left Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, will make the trip to Bavaria or intervene by videoconference.

Zelensky will also participate in the NATO summit

"I accepted with gratitude the invitation of our partners to participate in major international events", the G7 in Germany and, in the process, a NATO summit in Madrid, at the invitation of its Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, confirmed the Ukrainian president on Twitter.

Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Mario Draghi, the head of the Italian government, began an unprecedented visit of "support" to kyiv on Thursday, while the European Union must decide next week whether to grant Ukraine the official status of EU candidate.

The European leaders notably visited Irpin, one of the suburbs of the capital devastated during the first weeks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Mario Draghi, accompanied by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, then returned to central kyiv for talks with President Zelensky, before a joint press conference in the afternoon.

The Twenty-Seven must decide, during a summit on June 23 and 24, whether they will initially grant Ukraine the official status of candidate for membership, the start of a negotiation process which may last years.

The European Commission is due to make its recommendation known on Friday.
