Many train drivers are currently complaining about delayed or canceled trains.
But consumers can insist on their rights despite the 9-euro ticket - and then even use long-distance transport.
Munich – The Pentecost weekend was a stress test for Deutsche Bahn – as expected, the rush of customers was great.
The nine-euro ticket may have played a key role in this.
The saver ticket from the relief package led to overcrowded and delayed trains in many places.
In such a case, users of a nine-euro ticket can also board the ICE.
With the nine-euro ticket in the ICE?
This is possible in the event of delays
Because even with the saver ticket, passengers are entitled to the statutory rights.
Means: If there are problems with the corresponding connection, special rules apply.
"In the event of train delays or cancellations of local trains that lead to a delay of at least 20 minutes at the destination station, travelers with a nine-euro ticket have the right to also use a long-distance train," a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn told the
Berliner Zeitung
.
The long-distance trains include ICE, IC or EC - i.e. the trains that are actually excluded from the nine-euro ticket.
But watch out: There are a few details to consider.
Passengers are not allowed to simply board the more expensive train with the cheap ticket.
A corresponding ticket must be purchased beforehand.
The price will then be refunded.
"In order to have their long-distance ticket reimbursed, the customer must inform the Passenger Rights Service Center in writing that there was a delay on their route and that they therefore had to use the long-distance ticket." A screenshot from the DB app, from which the delay can be read, is sufficient proof is.
Nine-euro ticket: refund?
Not for the cheap ticket
In the event of a delay, there is usually also a partial refund of the ticket price.
As a rule, the following applies here: If the delay is more than 60 minutes, 25 percent of the ticket price will be refunded.
From 120 minutes, passengers can claim half of the costs back.

However, this option is not available with the nine-euro ticket, since it is a time travel pass.
With these tickets, reimbursement is limited to 25 percent of the price.
In the case of the nine-euro ticket, that would be 2.25 euros.
But the legislator stipulates that compensation must only be paid from a value of four euros.
Thus, the compensation for the nine-euro ticket is completely eliminated.
