A new Australian study revealed that a lack of vitamin D leads to deterioration of the brain and dementia.
The study, led by the University of Australia and reported by the British newspaper Express, performed genetic analysis on data available on 294,514 participants from the UK Biobank using non-linear randomization, which enabled the researchers to test for causality for dementia and stroke.
The scientific results of the study confirmed that up to 17 percent of dementia cases can be prevented by increasing vitamin D levels to the normal range in the general population, indicating that low levels of this vitamin are associated with reduced brain volume and an increased risk of dementia and stroke.
The study showed that the cerebrospinal fluid depends on the pulse of the arteries to filter the brain, and when this system falters, the excess proteins collect between the nerve cells in the organ, which frustrates the communication between the cells, but the neuroprotective qualities of vitamin D protect the brain cells from such damage.
The researchers called for the importance of maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D to protect the brain from cognitive decline.
