"What to do?" ponders Vera Pein from Schlagenhofen, looking at the display on the oil tank.

"One or two more months, then autumn will come and we'll be left without heating oil." As a foster mother, the energy crisis with its inflation hits her hard, because the nursing allowance is not being adjusted.

Schlagenhofen/Gilching

- For more than three decades, Vera Pein has given over 60 children a loving home.

Sometimes as short-term care, sometimes the boys and girls stayed until they came of age.

But even after they move out, pain is still there for their former spouses.

The 65-year-old is currently looking after three girls aged nine, 17 and 18, a five-year-old boy and two young male adults who still need support on their life path.

The increased food, electricity and heating costs are a major headache for her – as is the question of what will happen to her when she retires next year after she stops being a foster mother.

"Unfortunately, after 31 years as a foster mother, during which I could neither afford vacation nor illness, I will be left with no entitlement to a pension."

Vera Pein is only entitled to a basic pension.

A fate of all full-time foster parents.

For Vera Pein, this task is a vocation, pension provision was secondary.

When it comes time to say goodbye to “her” children next year, she will have neither adequate housing nor an adequate livelihood.

So that the old farm, which Pein has rented for herself and her children for many years in the Inningen district of Schlagenhofen, can be heated, the Gilchinger Verein Kinderinsel, in cooperation with the Raiffeisenbank Gilching, once again stepped in with a subsidy of 1000 euros each for the oil delivery.

“Our donation is from the pot of traditional profit saving.

In total, we were able to fairly distribute around 18,000 euros to Gilching clubs and organizations this year,” explains Raiba board member Jochen Beier.

Oliver Kübrich, board member of the children's island, regrets not being able to take over the complete oil bill as an association.

"What we can contribute is just a little more than a drop in the ocean.

But donations are generally declining.

2,000 euros are still missing to pay the oil supplier.”

He also has no solution ready when the foster mother project, which has been supported by the association for more than ten years, ends next year and Vera Pein has to go looking for an apartment.

The organization “Gemeinsam Gute Bewegungs” has already reported as an active supporter and generally takes care of emergencies.

With the "Run for a good cause" campaign, the organizers want to raise enough money over the next few months so that a habitable construction trailer or a jute in a suitable place can be financed for Vera Pein.

"I would like a jute as a retirement home best, because I can still be there for my former foster children later and comfort them or even support them in personal emergencies," emphasized Pein.

Anyone who wants to support the foster mother can do so via the children's island donation account DE 72 7016 3370 0003 221318, subject "earmarked oil".
