A forensic dental examination carried out at the National Institute of Criminalistics in Brasilia this Friday confirmed that part of the remains found on Wednesday are those of British journalist Dom Phillips, according to Federal Police sources cited by CNN Brasil.

The remains of two people arrived in Brasilia on Thursday night.

The bodies were found on Wednesday afternoon after one of the suspects arrested in the investigation of the disappearance of Phillips and activist Bruno Pereira reported the place where the bodies had been buried, about 3.1 kilometers from the area where the crime would have occurred.

Both had disappeared on June 5, in Vale do Javari, in the Amazon.

The Brazilian Federal Police confirmed the identification of one of the bodies in a statement.

“The confirmation was made based on the Forensic Odontology exam combined with the Forensic Anthropology exam.

Work is underway to fully identify the remains, understand the causes of death, and point out the dynamics of the crime and cover-up of the bodies," the statement added.

According to versions from Federal Police sources, Phillips' family sent tests with the characteristics of the journalist's dental arches, which helped in the identification.

After examination of the dental arches, a DNA examination on the remains must still be performed for a second confirmation.

The remains of the other body, which could be that of activist Bruno Pereira, are still being investigated.

The Federal Police is still waiting for the family documents and the analysis of the exams.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price offered his condolences on Friday to the families of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, "killed for supporting the conservation of the rainforest and native peoples." in Brazil.

"We call for accountability and justice: We must collectively strengthen efforts to protect environmental defenders and journalists," Price tweeted.

This report was made with information from Rodrigo Pedroso, Maija-Liisa Ehlinger, Kenzô Machida and Jennifer Houser.
