The Azonymire Naval Research Organization announced the discovery of the wreck of the ship "Prince Umberto" that was sunk by an Austro-Hungarian submarine in 1916 in the Strait of Otranto between Italy and Albania.
According to the organization, the wreck of the sunken ship was not significantly damaged, as it fell into the silt for more than 5 meters, and the hull of the ship was cracked almost in the middle due to hitting the bottom, while the remaining parts of the ship were covered with coral reefs and rust grew in the form of stalactites similar to those on the Titanic that sank in 1912.
The search robot was lowered to the site of the accident despite the strong current in the strait, where scientists were able to take pictures and videos of the sinking ship.
The ship "Prince Umberto" carried infantry soldiers from the 55th Regiment of the Italian Royal Army, accompanied by several destroyers. The Austro-Hungarian submarine "U-5" fired torpedoes at the ship from a short distance, one of which hit the stern, causing it to sink in a few minutes.
At the time, the attack killed at least 1.9 thousand people, making the accident "the largest naval disaster in the First World War."
