Grainau - The start of the watch season was already more strenuous than usual for the volunteers at the Grainau water rescue service over the past few weekends.

But what happened on Corpus Christi on the banks of the Eibsee in the immediate vicinity of their water rescue station, the helpers do not want to experience a second time.

A 10-year-old boy happily played in the water with his mother.

What was not apparent to anyone: Both people are absolute non-swimmers.

It is thanks to attentive passers-by and their courageous intervention as well as the quick communication of the lifeguards and their immediate arrival that the boy is still alive.

As is so often the case, the young bather's near drowning happened very suddenly and rather silently.

Unfortunately, while he lost the ground under his feet and could no longer keep his head above water, his understandably distraught mother was of no help.

But fortunately the helpers jumping into the water and the approaching water rescuers.

Sandro Leitner, chairman of the local group, makes an urgent appeal to all bathers on this occasion: “I advise all non-swimmers not to go into public bathing waters that are unknown to them.

The incident highlighted the importance of raising awareness that non-swimmers should only go to pools designated for them, such as local baths.

And ideally for the purpose of learning to swim.

Even for experienced swimmers, bathing in lakes harbors considerable dangers due to the rapidly and steeply sloping underground, currents or the cold temperatures.

Non-swimmers don't stand a chance!” Leitner is grateful for the attention of the shore guests, who were able to prevent worse things from happening.

He also praises his volunteers

who did everything right with their trained and quick intervention on site.

"That's what we're here for, we help everyone, right away.

In the best case, however, non-swimmers do not even get into this life-threatening situation for them
