From 2035, no new combustion engines will be sold in the EU.

Volkswagen and Mercedes support the plans.

Brussels – What has been apparent for a long time is becoming more and more certain: the age of the combustion engine is over – at least in Europe.

After the EU Commission, the European Parliament also waved through the ban on internal combustion engines from 2035 on Wednesday.

However, before the law comes into force, the member states still have to agree.

However, the reactions were very mixed.

However, Volkswagen and Mercedes consider the plan to be feasible.

From the Wolfsburg headquarters there was a clear commitment from VW to the ban on internal combustion engines from the middle of the next decade.

The EU's decarbonization strategy is "ambitious but feasible," explained Volkswagen, as reported by "Automotive News".

The transition to electromobility is “irreversible” anyway.

According to Volkswagen and Mercedes, the EU's combustion ban from 2035 can be implemented.

VW emphasizes that "this is the only ecologically, technologically and economically sensible way to replace combustion engines as quickly as possible".

Accordingly, the automotive group from Wolfsburg was planning to phase out combustion engines by 2035 even before the decision by the EU Parliament.

In addition to Volkswagen, Mercedes also acknowledged the ban on the sale of diesel and petrol engines aimed at by the EU.

At the company headquarters in Stuttgart, they want to phase out combustion engines much earlier than the law of the European Parliament provides.

Combustion off: Ford, Jaguar and Stellantis also support EU plans

"From 2030 we are ready to be completely electric, wherever market conditions allow," Eckart von Klaeden, Head of External Relations at Mercedes, told dpa.

"The decision makes the legislators responsible, who must ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place."

The situation is similar at Ford, Stellantis and Jaguar.

All three manufacturers support a ban on combustion engines in Europe from 2035. Ford and Jaguar, along with Mercedes and Volvo, are among the manufacturers who called for a global ban on combustion engines by 2040 at the UN climate conference in Glasgow.
