In a message this Thursday night, the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, said again that he is open to dialogue with the indigenous sector and other social groups that have demonstrated since Monday against his government. .

The president spoke of the need to sit down at a table, seek solutions and assured that dialogue is the best way out.

“We have insisted on our willingness to dialogue.

Several organizations have offered to mediate: the Church, the United Nations and universities.

Welcome to all of them,” Lasso said.

The president insisted that his government is ready to prevent the mobilizations from becoming more violent and that the progressive use of force will be used, within the framework of the law, to defend those who want to work.

He announced that the government is preparing mechanisms to compensate for the effects of the pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine on the national economy.

“There is no trigger, there is no reason that justifies violence.

No one has thought of privatizing any strategic sector, nor any public service.

We are working to build a strong state that cares for all citizens, especially the most vulnerable,” added Lasso.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), which has been leading the national mobilization since Monday in some provinces, demands that the government reduce fuel prices, address the problem of unemployment, regulate the prices of farm products and combat the crime, among other demands.

The Confederation insists that it will maintain the stoppage.

Its president, Leonidas Iza, called for a peaceful demonstration and assures that his mobilization does not have vandalism overtones.

The fifth day of protests in several provinces was marked, like other days, by road closures, especially in the provinces of the Sierra and, as night fell, there were clashes in the Plaza de Santo Domingo in Quito between police and protesters.

During the morning two markets in the capital were closed, but after a few hours they opened their doors.

In the educational field, and until further notice, face-to-face classes continue to be suspended in more than 3,000 schools.

Students hold virtual classes, according to the Ministry of Education.
