News about the Ukraine war: Around 330,000 Russian soldiers in the war

+++ 08.00 a.m.:

In the meantime, around 330,000 soldiers have probably been deployed in the war against Ukraine, even without a new general mobilization.

The US think tank Institute for the Study of War reports, citing Ukrainian officials.

However, it is unclear whether the figures also include soldiers who have already been forcibly mobilized in the self-proclaimed "People's Republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk.

According to the analysis, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine for Main Operations Oleksiy Gromov said the Kremlin could still increase the number of Russian military personnel in Ukraine by conducting covert or full-scale mobilization.

Most recently, the age limit for military service was abolished by a new law.

In eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian troops continued to fight heavy battles in the Luhansk and Donetsk areas.

In the direction of the city of Bakhmut there are Russian attacks "to improve the tactical situation," said the Ukrainian general staff.

The towns of Wessele, Soledar, Berestowe and Vowchojarivka were under artillery fire.

There is also heavy fighting in the separatist stronghold of Donetsk.

In the neighboring Luhansk region, the city of Sievjerodonetsk was particularly hotly contested.

+++ 3:00 p.m.:

A Russian airstrike killed at least three and wounded seven people in Lysychansk in the Luhansk region.

According to the Kyiv Independent, Russian troops hit a residential building where civilians were hiding, Luhansk Oblast Governor Serhiy Haidai reported on Thursday (June 16).

The rubble is now being cleaned up on site.

According to the official, Russia destroyed or damaged nearly 11,300 houses in the Luhansk region, including 3,188 high-rise buildings.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 60 to 100 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed every day since Russia stepped up its Donbass offensive.

In the last two weeks, this number has increased significantly, said David Arakhamia, as reported by the online portal Kyiv Independent.

Arakhamia leads Ukraine's negotiations with Russia and is therefore one of Zelenskyy's closest advisers.

War in Ukraine: Number of dead soldiers has risen significantly in the last two weeks

Ukraine has drafted a million people into the army and can recruit another two million, giving it the numbers it needs to continue fighting in Donbass, Arakhamia added.

US Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said the number of Ukrainian casualties is difficult to estimate.

Earlier media reports of around 100 deaths and up to 300 injuries per day "roughly corresponded to our assessment," Milley continued.

He did not address the recent Ukrainian assessment.

Milley also said Russia has suffered "huge" casualties and Ukraine is fighting effectively.

Battle for Sievjerodonetsk: 10,000 civilians trapped - escape bridge destroyed by Russians

+++ 1:00 p.m .:

According to the local governor, around 10,000 civilians are stuck in the Ukrainian city of Sievjerodonetsk, where fighting has been taking place for weeks, as reported by the BBC, among others.

"Out of 100,000 residents, there are about 10,000 left," Luhansk region governor Sergei Haidai said on Telegram.

He reported that the Ukrainian army was holding back the enemy in the city "as far as possible".

The final bridge leading out of the city was destroyed in fighting earlier in the week, trapping residents in the city.

Sieverodonetsk: Still 10,000 civilians trapped in the embattled city

The trapped civilians - many of whom are sheltering in bunkers beneath the Azot chemical plant - are running out of essential supplies as supplies of water, food, sanitation and electricity dwindle.

According to the Interfax news agency, Russia wants to reopen a humanitarian corridor for the civilian population.

The planned evacuation did not take place on Wednesday.

The United Nations has told the BBC that hundreds of civilians have taken refuge in bunkers under the Azot plant and that water and food supplies are rapidly deteriorating.

Drueke and Huynh went missing during the battle and no remains were found in subsequent searches.

The US State Department and Ukraine have not yet confirmed that the two Americans are missing.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and are in contact with the Ukrainian authorities," said a spokesman.

According to a CNN interview, both went to the Ukraine war out of love for the United States.

Almost simultaneously, a Russian propaganda channel posted on Telegram that two Americans had been captured near Kharkiv.

Russia: Ukraine 'cynically' failed evacuation from Azot factory

First report from Thursday, June 16, 7:10 a.m.:

Russia has accused Ukraine of preventing the evacuation of civilians from a chemical plant in the besieged eastern Ukrainian city of Sieverodonetsk.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday that Russia had created a corridor to bring civilians from the Azot factory to safety.

However, the “Kiev authorities” had “cynically failed” the “humanitarian operation”.

On Tuesday, Russia announced a humanitarian corridor that would be open for twelve hours.

According to Russian information, civilians entrenched in the Azot plant were to be given the opportunity to leave Sievjerodonetsk in the direction of the Luhansk region controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
