Waakirchen gets a new town hall.

It's already there.

The municipality bought the district savings bank building as its new administrative headquarters in the town centre.

Waakirchen – In the basement of the Waakirchner town hall, a support secures the ceiling above.

There is no danger to life or limb, but the condition of the house is an issue.

"An ancient thing" is the 100-year-old building, says Mayor Norbert Kerkel (FWG): "We have to act."

Now everything has come together nicely.

The Kreissparkasse Miesbach-Tegernsee branch in Waakirchen has long since become far too large.

The municipality of Waakirchen, in turn, needs a new town hall.

That's how we agreed.

"A stroke of luck," explains Kerkel, who announced the acquisition at the public meeting of the municipal council.

With the purchase, the community is also completing the Bäckervoitl property that it acquired in 2010.

"Otherwise it might have gone to some investor," Kerkel makes clear.

The municipality has the development of the area in the center in its own hands.

In addition, buying and converting the existing building is cheaper than building a new town hall.

The Kreissparkasse is currently using almost the entire building.

The Hagleitner architectural office is based on the upper floor. Nothing will change quickly in the current situation.

The district savings bank and the architect remain as tenants.

"But we're getting into the planning now," explains Kerkel.

The conversion will begin within the next four or five years: "We can't stay in the old town hall for ten more years."

Kerkel reports that the effort involved in converting the approximately 20-year-old building into a town hall will be limited.

"We don't have to do much upstairs." Of course, changing the use of the ticket hall requires major measures.

In addition, an extension might be necessary.

"We don't have enough space," reports Kerkel from the visit.

18 administrative employees are currently employed in the Waakirchner town hall.

Future of the current town hall still open

The Kreissparkasse, on the other hand, will continue to be present in Waakirchen, as CEO Martin Mihalovits assures: "But nowadays you don't need branches of this size anymore." From a business point of view, this makes no sense.

The district savings bank will set up a self-service area and also a consulting office, announces Mihalovits: "We are not withdrawing from the place."

Incidentally, it is not the first bank building in the district to become the town hall.

The municipality of Hausham has also converted a branch of the savings bank into an administrative headquarters, and the inauguration took place in October 2019.

The location of the district savings bank building in the middle of town is a big plus for Kerkel.

A new town hall building at the old location would also have required a transitional domicile and thus an enormous amount of additional work - a problem that the municipality of Rottach-Egern is currently facing.

Incidentally, the building yard next to the current town hall will remain in place.

The rooms there are now in good condition, explains Kerkel.

What will happen to the old town hall after moving out is still completely open.

A demolition and the construction of new apartments would be conceivable, the mayor suggests.

First of all, however, they will take care of the new town hall: "The other has time."
