The Russian Foreign Ministry described the news of the arrest of a "Russian intelligence officer" in the Netherlands as a "media fabrication".
Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today: "The Russian Foreign Ministry followed the media about the detention of a Brazilian citizen in the Netherlands, but Dutch officials for some reason considered him to be a "Russian intelligence officer."
Zakharova indicated that the accident occurred in early April, but the Dutch authorities decided to report it after only three months.
The spokeswoman said: It is clear that this media fabrication aims to stir up another espionage scandal related to Russia and frighten the public, considering that this malicious plot is behind the "Russians."
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced earlier today that it had summoned Martin Elgersma, the Dutch Chargé d'Affairs in Russia, and handed him a note of protest against the practice of illegal business activities at the Dutch consulate in Moscow.
