A Fateful Week for the Government: The Coalition Among the Survivors - and Legislation Stuck | Israel today

2022-06-18T20:52:33.665Z

MK Auerbach is expected to decide by Wednesday whether to support the dissolution of the Knesset • The coalition invites polls for the elections • The stagnation price: more than 100 stuck bills

The coalition is preparing for a week that will be perhaps the most fateful since its formation.

Along with Ghanaim and Zoabi, the pair of rebellious MKs, all eyes in the political system are on Orbach.

Orbach announced his retirement from the coalition last week, but made it clear that he would give another week in which he would not vote on the Knesset dissolution law.

Orbach, who was on vacation in the north over the weekend, is considering voting on the Knesset dissolution law in a preliminary reading as early as Wednesday this week.

It is expected to decide by Wednesday on the dissolution of the Knesset.

Orbach's goal is to promote the dissolution of the Knesset in order to put Bennett and Saar under pressure, because if they do not negotiate the formation of a right-wing government in the current Knesset, the price will be an election. And he will not drag Israel to the elections if he does not want to.

Saar and Bennett refuse to give an award to Netanyahu, and the possibility of a right-wing government in the current Knesset is low.

It is important to note, however, that Auerbach has not yet decided.

The right is pressuring him not to drag the State of Israel to the elections, arguing that even passing a law to dissolve the Knesset in a preliminary reading will start a dynamic of elections that will be difficult to stop.

The fact that Orbach does not want to put Lapid in the prime minister's office instead of Bennett takes place in his considerations.

The Likud will not raise the law to dissolve the Knesset this week if they are not sure that Orbach will vote with them for or will be absent and the law will pass.

Aside from the possibility of passing the Knesset Dissolution Law, the coalition's time to advance the Judea and Samaria regulations is pressing.

Neither Zoabi nor Ganaim changed their minds, and in light of the lack of a majority, it seems that this week, too, the coalition will not put the regulations to a vote.

As you may recall, the coalition has until June 30 to pass the regulations, and if they fall, it will lead to legal chaos in Judea and Samaria.

Government ministries have begun examining legal alternatives to the possibility of regulations expiring but the government still hopes to bring about the dismissal of Ganaim and Zoabi and try to stabilize the coalition to try to persuade Orbach to pass the Judea and Samaria regulations and return to the coalition.

But the chances of that happening are decreasing day by day.

Coalition and opposition parties began organizing for elections, conducting internal polls and meeting with political strategists.

A senior coalition official estimated: "If the dissolution of the Knesset is a fait accompli by June 30, we will pass the Judea and Samaria regulations together with the opposition and go to the polls."

"Cork" of bills

Meanwhile, a particularly long legislative blockage has been created in the Knesset, which is hampering important processes.

According to a document from the Knesset secretariat a few days ago, there are 91 laws on behalf of the government and another 17 bills on behalf of the Knesset, including MKs from the coalition who are stuck and will continue to get stuck because the government does not have a majority in the Knesset.

Among the bills stuck are economic laws like compensation for the self-employed who have been harmed by the omicron, religious legal bills and more.

Temporary regulations that are usually passed almost automatically, such as preventing infiltrators, exempting religious girls from military service, and more, also got stuck.

It is estimated that the coalition will withdraw most of the bills tomorrow, as the necessary majority will not be found.

Pros and cons

Against the background of the smell of elections in the air, citizens and associations on both sides of the political spectrum held demonstrations last night (Saturday). And bridges across the country hung signs in support of the "Government of Change and Unity."
