Berlin – Relief for high living costs: Because of the Ukraine war, but also during the Corona pandemic, everyday prices have risen in many places.

This becomes clear at the gas station, but also in the supermarket and when you look at the rising heating costs.

For this reason, the federal government announced a corona bonus for recipients of social benefits at the beginning of 2022 - which has now even been doubled.

The increasing costs in everyday life are a major burden, especially for people on low incomes, even if the Bundestag has already decided to suspend the Hartz IV sanctions.

In addition to the Hartz IV bonus in the relief package, the government wants to use the Corona bonus to cushion the particular hardship caused by the pandemic, which has resulted in rising living costs.

A one-time payment of 100 euros was initially planned for this - but due to the war in Ukraine and the resulting rise in energy prices, the Corona bonus for Hartz IV was doubled again.

Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil explained this with the words: "We are increasing the one-off payments for everyone who receives benefits from the social security systems to 200 euros in order to support people in this difficult situation." Bonus a one-time special service of 200 euros.

This law was finally passed in May on the same day as the 2022 relief package.

When will the Corona bonus for Hartz IV recipients be paid out?

But when can recipients of social benefits such as Hartz IV count on the Corona bonus?

According to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the special benefit of 200 euros will be paid out in July 2022.

As a result, the subsidy is paid out with the Hartz IV standard rate.

Another aid from the state from the relief package is also to be provided in July: the children's bonus for 2022 will end up in the parents' accounts in the same month.

Who will receive the Corona bonus of 200 euros - and who will get nothing from the Hartz IV subsidy?

The corona bonus of 200 euros affects all adult recipients of unemployment benefit II (Hartz IV), social assistance or basic security who are entitled to benefits in July 2022.

But recipients of unemployment benefit I should not go away empty-handed either: they receive a one-time payment of 100 euros.

Unemployment benefit I (ALG I)

Unemployment benefit I is an insurance benefit that employees pay for themselves.

Unemployment benefit II (ALG II) - or Hartz IV

Unemployment benefit II is a state benefit for needy job seekers and is therefore also called basic security for employable beneficiaries.

According to the draft law, the following applies: “Beneficiaries who are entitled to unemployment benefit II or social benefit for the month of July 2022 and whose needs are based on standard needs level 1 or 2 will receive one for this month to compensate for the additional expenses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic One-time payment [...]."

Accordingly, the regulation also means that those in need who had to cope with rising prices in the first half of 2022 and then managed to escape from the need for help - or who have retired - do not benefit from the one-off payment.

In addition to the Hartz IV bonus for recipients of social benefits, the Federal Government has launched further grants and bonuses for German citizens with the second relief package.

This includes the 9-euro ticket for bus and train - which has been effective since June and may now even be extended until December, as well as the children's bonus from the relief package and a fuel discount.

All employees subject to income tax can also expect an energy flat rate of 300 euros - in order to be able to partially compensate for the exploding energy prices in Germany.
