On Sunday, August 14, Kesselbergstraße belongs to racing cyclists.

On this day they hold the European Road Bike Championship and also roll through the district for this purpose.

A major sporting event is coming up in Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen this summer.

On the one hand, this creates anticipation, but on the other hand it also causes concern.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

– The European Cycling Championships will be held in Munich in August.

The men's road bike race on August 14 runs through the district for about 100 kilometers.

This requires numerous road closures.

Tourists are also looking forward to the advertising effect.

European Championship: road bike races via Kesselberg

The "European Championships Munich 2022" are the largest sporting event in the state capital since the Summer Olympics in 1972. Europe's best athletes from various sports will fight for medals from August 11th to 21st.

The European Cycling Championships also take place in this context.

And this is where the district comes into focus on Sunday, August 14th.

On this day, the road bike race takes place here.

The start is in Murnau, but after just a few kilometers the drivers in Schlehdorf reach the district border.

From there it continues via Kochel and over the Kesselberg.

The route continues on the southern shore road along the Walchensee, through Jachenau and Lenggries to Bad Tölz.

Here the riders cycle through Marktstraße to Geretsried, Eurasburg and Münsing.

The athletes will already have covered 101 kilometers there before they cross the district border to Starnberg.

After a good 209 kilometers they reach their destination at Odeonsplatz in Munich.

Nice TV pictures expected from Brauneck and Bad Tölz

The race will definitely be broadcast on Eurosport.

It is still unclear whether other TV stations will join, says Andreas Wüstefeld, head of Tölzer Land Tourismus (TLT).

Above all, he sees the advertising effect for the district.

"It's a nice opportunity to present yourself to an international audience," he says.

The viewers should not only see beautiful pictures on TV, but also learn something worth knowing about the region.

In addition, Wüstefeld and his team were able to fill the script for the moderators with lots of information.

So while the drivers struggle on the streets of the district, the spectators learn something about the Brauneck or the historic market street in Bad Tölz.

There will also be some moderation stations with speakers along the route, says Wüstefeld.

In addition, the towns and communities along the way have also thought about how they want to welcome the athletes.

In Bad Tölz, for example, "we will greet you with music and customs on Marktstrasse," says the deputy spa director, Susanne Frey-Allgaier.

Originally, a lot more of the supporting program was planned.

"But at the same time, the Harley meeting is taking place in Tölz." They didn't want to create any competition here, says Frey-Allgaier, who also hopes for "a positive advertising effect" from the television images.

Bike week in Lenggries, mobility event in Geretsried

In line with the European Cycling Championships, the municipality of Lenggries has planned a whole cycling week from August 8th to 14th - with tours, children's activities and much more, reports Maria Bader, head of the Lenggries tourist information.

On the day of the race there is a small bike mile around the TI with various exhibitors, information stands, food and music.

There will also be a lot going on in Geretsried, as City Hall spokesman Thomas Loibl reveals.

An event on the topics of bicycles and mobility is to take place at Neuer Platz.

At the moment, however, the plans are not quite complete, according to Loibl.

Numerous road closures are necessary to ensure that drivers can roll safely through the district.

Many are only needed for a short time, others longer.

says Wüstefeld.

The Kesselberg (from 5 a.m.) and the southern shore road on Lake Walchensee (from 6 a.m.) will definitely be closed for hours this Sunday.

Jachenau's Mayor Klaus Rauchenberger recently addressed the latter at the citizens' meeting.

"It's a long weekend, when the weather is nice there will be a lot going on." The passage of the athletes through the Jachenau will probably only take about half an hour.

Nevertheless, it is foreseeable that there will be traffic delays.

The toll road must be closed early enough to prevent the first swimmers from entering.

For European cycling championships: closures on Kesselberg and Walchensee

Kochel's town hall chief Thomas Holz also expects "that the hour-long closure of the Kesselberg on a Sunday will have an impact".

And he also sees the "not inconsiderable effort for the members of our volunteer fire brigades, since they take over traffic safety together with the police".

In general, however, it is "something special that such an event leads through our region," says Holz.

"In this respect, it can of course be a nice advertising effect for our tourist area if correspondingly beautiful recordings - including of the landscape - are broadcast, as is known from the Tour de France, for example."

By the way, on Sunday, August 21st, the women will still drive.

Your route leads from Landsberg past the Ammersee and Starnberger See to Wolfratshausen and over the Wolfratshauser Berg on the B 11 to Munich.
