Should the mask requirement come back in view of the increasing corona numbers? Justice Minister Buschmann does not yet consider the benefit to be proven – the return of lockdowns is also unlikely “with today’s knowledge”.

In view of the increasing corona numbers, the debate about renewed measures to contain the virus is becoming more intense.

FDP Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann is keeping a low profile and wants to wait and see.

He obviously does not yet consider the benefit of the mask requirement to be scientifically proven.

“If the state wants to prescribe masks, for example indoors, it has to be evidence-based and proportionate.

We'll discuss whether that's the case when all the reports are available," said the FDP politician to the Düsseldorf "Rheinische Post".

This attitude is met with criticism from physicians.

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, explained in the newspapers of the Funke media group that the "scientific evidence on the sense of compulsory masks and vaccination" is "overwhelming".

Buschmann said he wears a mask himself in the supermarket, but voluntarily.

Green warns of preparations for the fall

The Council of Experts, whose report the FDP politician wants to await, is scheduled to present its opinion on June 30th on the review of the previous corona protection measures.

According to the FDP, future measures are to be discussed in the summer, and after the end of the Bundestag break, the Infection Protection Act is to be amended shortly before it expires on September 23.

Medical official Montgomery, however, called on politicians to quickly develop an action plan.

He accused the opponents of strict legal regulation that they were »not concerned with medicine and protecting people from illness, suffering and death.

They are only concerned with economic interests, embellished with an absolute concept of freedom that neglects protection,” he said.

Representatives of the Greens and SPD had recently pushed for the possibility of renewed restrictions such as the obligation to wear masks and hygiene concepts to be laid down in a new infection protection law.

Green leader Omid Nouripour warned the traffic light coalition to make preparations for a possible new corona wave.

"All experts assume that the situation may worsen in the fall," he told T-online.

»I am counting on us taking precautions together and preventing further lockdowns.«

FDP politician Buschmann also considers a return to corona lockdowns to be unlikely.

“There will be no school closures and lockdowns this winter, at least not with what we know today,” he told the “Rheinische Post”.

Pupils have already suffered greatly in the pandemic and have given up a lot of access to education.

»Some will never catch up in their lifetime.«

In principle, the minister apparently did not want to rule out the option of distance learning with the phrase "at least with today's knowledge".
