Large-scale operation in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region: A suspicious liquid was found during a border check on Friday.

Now the federal police gave the all-clear.

Update from June 17, 3:50 p.m .:

Great excitement on Friday at the newly established G7 border post near Mittenwald: around noon, a sniffer dog struck during a routine check.

Because of the suspicion of a possibly hidden explosive device, the federal police cordoned off everything in the area in question.

Two and a quarter hours later, at around 2:15 p.m., it turned out that the bomb was a false alarm.

"Much excitement about nothing," says a spokesman for the Federal Police.

At the same time, he asked for understanding for the work of his colleagues.

"You have to give us time to do it properly." And if the importation of explosives is in the room - nine days before the start of the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau - then all the alarm bells would ring among the security forces.

When the alarmed special commando arrived to examine the suspicious car, federal highway 2 was already completely blocked between the south distributor and the state border.

A long traffic jam formed in both directions.

Traffic was diverted via the Leutasch state road.

According to the federal police, there were also delays there at times because two mobile homes had bumped into each other.

Update from June 17, 3 p.m.:

Due to a large-scale police operation, the border crossing between Bavaria and Austria near Mittenwald on federal highway 2 was closed for several hours on Friday.

It jammed on both sides.

The federal police initially gave no information on the background in the afternoon.

The mission has now ended (see update from June 17, 2:31 p.m.).

The railway line running alongside the main road (between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck) was also affected by the closure.

The police did not want to speak of a connection with the G7 summit, which begins on June 26 at nearby Schloss Elmau.

Update from June 17, 2:31 p.m .:

As the police announced on Twitter, the large-scale operation is now over.

"Police operations at the #Mittenwald-#Scharnitz border crossing have ended," the post says.

And further:

"The route is open to traffic again".
