Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel denied that Russia had used the (North Stream 2) pipeline, which would have supplied gas to Europe, as a weapon in its own military operation in Ukraine.
The German newspaper, Reductions Netverk Deutschland, quoted Merkel as saying, "Russia did not use the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to pump gas to Europe as a weapon because when the operation began in Ukraine, work on the pipeline had not been launched."
Merkel explained that it is profitable for Germany to buy gas through pipelines from Russia and not from the United States, pointing out that there is no company that agreed to build stations to receive liquefied gas because of its high prices.
