Impossible to take a dip this summer in the only whitewater swimming spot in the whole of Île-de-France. For euro directive reasons

Huge disappointment.

Meldois, Briards and passing tourists will all be deprived this year.

European Union decision: swimming is prohibited in the Marne at Meaux.

It is a very popular place, the only one in Île-de-France where you can swim in white water.

Every summer, swimming there was supervised and free, from the beginning of July to the end of August with sometimes extensions in September when the weather was good.

Alas, all that is over.

It is the regional health agency (ARS) which has just informed the town hall of Meaux.

More exactly, the ARS transmitted a decision of the EEA, European Agency of the environment, which judged the quality of the water of the Marne insufficient.

“These are new European directives.

We know that the new regulations now take into account the averages instead of the medians over several years of analyzes between 2017 and 2021. The strong storms of last year increased the poor results of the samples, "deciphers the mayor of Meaux, Jean-Francois Cope (LR).

An order prohibiting swimming has just been taken

Immediate consequence: Mayor Jean-François Copé (LR) issued a municipal decree on Thursday June 16 to ban swimming.

While until now, this was allowed "at the risk and peril" of the swimmer outside the period of Operation Meaux Plage during which swimming was supervised for two months by CRS lifeguards.

This decision is a blow for the inhabitants but also for the inhabitants of the sector who discover the news.

“It's very nice of the European Union to say that swimming is prohibited.

But what is the EU going to do next to make bathing possible in 2023?

Will she find the polluters upstream of the Marne?

For its part, the town hall of Meaux would have liked the AEE to impose daily or even twice-a-day analyzes in order to allow swimmers access to the Marne rather than this outright closure.

To compensate, the entrance to the swimming pools goes to 2 euros

The agglomeration council of the country of Meaux was to submit to the vote this Friday evening a deliberation to apply a tariff of 2 euros to the Tauziet and Frot swimming pools all summer long for all the inhabitants of the agglomeration community.

For children under 4 and over 65, these pools will be free.

They will close every day at 9:30 p.m.

The town hall adds that the number of water games on the banks of the Marne and other swimming pools will be increased.

This bad news comes as Meaux-les-Bains, the new version of Meaux plage with two locations, is due to open on Saturday July 2.

“These are two sites, two atmospheres.

At the beach, it will be a family club with entertainment, sand, swimming pools filled with drinking water, a foam party and concerts.

In the Jardin des Trinitaires, near the station, it will be quieter.

There will even be an open-air cinema, pony rides, chess games, a Sunday morning brunch and a tea dance…”

“The announcement of these new regulations is heartbreaking for all of us.

We will inform the Meldois quickly of the muscular program that we have prepared for this summer.

[...] We hope that for 2023, swimming will be possible and that everything will be done by the authorities in charge to improve the quality of the Marne”

Meaux-les-Bains from Saturday 2 July.
