MOSCOW - Britain on Thursday (June 16) imposed sanctions on Russian Orthodox Patriarch Cyril.

This was the State Department's response to Cyril's "advocacy" of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.

The cleric is considered a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin – as is TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov.

He then railed harshly against British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Russian state television.

"We will not stop defending freedom and democracy and keeping up the pressure on Putin until Ukraine prevails." Vladimir Legoida, a spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church, however, called the sanctions measures "absurd" and "nonsensical".
