Igor Sechin, head of the Russian company (Rosneft), stressed that Europe is committing suicide in the field of energy and is losing its independence and competitiveness against the United States by imposing sanctions on Russia.

And the Russia Today website quoted Sechin as saying in an interview on the sidelines of the Petersburg International Economic Forum, which concluded its activities today, “As a result of the anti-Russian sanctions, Europe has permanently lost its autonomy and opportunities to become not only a political pole, but an alternative economic pole to the United States.” Russian oil and gas has become the most expensive region in the world with energy prices, undermining its competitiveness.

“Energy suicide on the part of Europe will have long-term consequences. We are already witnessing a decline in its economic potential, a loss in competitiveness, and direct losses to investors,” Sechin added, noting that the United States in Europe sparked a “coal renaissance,” undermining global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint.

Sechin explained that the demand for cheaper alternatives is rising and the share of coal in the energy balance is increasing, and therefore coal power generation in Europe may grow, which has already grown by 18 percent in 2021 and by more than a third in 2022, which means that “there is a real coal renaissance,” stressing that the speech Western countries about the need to accelerate decarbonization runs counter to their actual practices and thus contribute to the destruction of countries' economies.
