Concerned about the marine and mountain trail waste group "My Mountains and Seas Log" team, today (18th) announced the 2021 garbage data in Hong Kong, synthesizing 200 beach and mountain cleaning activities, covering a total length of 17 kilometers of beaches and 328 kilometers of trails, A total of 9,000 kilograms of rubbish were picked up, including plastic bottles, cigarette butts, paper towels and other common rubbish, as well as toys and daily necessities from different ages.

The "My Mountain and Sea Log" team announced the latest local garbage data today. The comprehensive team and various organizations organized a total of 200 beach and mountain cleaning activities. A total of 9,000 kilograms of garbage were picked up on the 17-kilometer beach and 328-kilometer mountain trail. Including more than 50,000 water bottles, 10,000 plastic bottle caps, 6,000 cigarette butts, 5,500 shoes, etc.

As for the garbage picked up on the beach, nearly 95% of the garbage is plastic, and nearly 75% is food-related disposables; the top three garbage are glue bottles, glue caps and fishery buoys, foaming Glue is also a common and large amount of garbage on the beach, but because most of the styrofoam has been crushed into fine particles, it is difficult to count, so it is not listed in the top three.

Cigarette butts, paper towels, and food wrapping paper are the top three items picked up on mountain trails.

Yang Ting, the project leader of "My Mountain and Sea Log", mentioned that the garbage picked up on the beach is more complicated and will be affected by the wind direction and typhoon. For example, the southeast wind often blows in Hong Kong, and the amount of garbage on the beach in the east or southeast is often more; and After each typhoon, there will be more than 10 times more debris on the beach than usual.

She also pointed out that garbage from China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and other places is sometimes picked up on the beaches of Hong Kong.

On the other hand, the litter on the trail is relatively simple, mainly affected by hiking activities.

She also specifically mentioned that during the epidemic, she tried to pick up masks and quick test kits on beaches and mountain trails.

The team sorted out some of the garbage collected in the past year and held a two-day Shanhai Garbage Exhibition.

The exhibition displays more than 1,000 pieces of garbage, most of which are marine garbage. Among them are a large number of toys, including plush dolls, Superman, Captain America, and various dolls, some of which are more than 20s and 30s.

Another special piece of "rubbish" is an ID card from the 1960s. Yang Ting pointed out that it was picked up during a mountain-cleaning activity. This ID card was issued in 1962. Some were in their 20s at the time.

In addition to the ID card, there are two letters in a bottle, one is a friend letter from Sichuan, and the other is a love letter.

The exhibition also displays lighters, toothbrushes, shoes, sparrows, etc., as well as installation art made of garbage.

The team pointed out that most of the garbage that flows into nature is generated by human activities on land, and then flows into the ocean through streams and urban drainage channels when it is windy and rainy.

The team hopes to draw public attention to the problem of marine and mountain trail waste through the exhibition and activities of beach and mountain cleaning, so as to reflect on it and start waste reduction at the source.

The team also hopes that by establishing a local waste database, it can serve as a basis for future research or policy advocacy.
