The Environment Bureau revitalized a 2-hectare landfill in Tseung Kwan O, and handed it over to Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to prepare for the construction of an environmental education base "Environmental Village" with a campsite.
The project received funding this year, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held today (18th).
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said when attending the ceremony today that 90% of the landfills that have been restored can now be developed and used for various facilities. It is hoped that the "Environmental Village" will enable citizens to learn how to achieve carbon neutrality in their lives.
The "Environmental Village" project, an environmental education base located in the first phase of the Tseung Kwan O landfill, is expected to be completed and put into service in the second quarter of next year. The site will include camping sites, community farms, butterfly gardens, and amphitheaters. It is expected to become a Hong Kong An important base for carbon neutrality and environmental education.
Its design is based on environmentally friendly materials, increases natural convection, and installs more than 300 solar panels to supply the electricity required for daily operations.
During the ground-breaking ceremony, environmentally friendly wood chips were used to replace the commonly used soil. In his speech, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said that the landfill where the "Environmental Village" is located was closed in the 1990s. After restoration by the EPD, the land resources have been put to good use; Ninety percent of the rehabilitated landfills can be developed and planned for various facilities. At present, there are pet parks, football centers developed by football associations, etc. The results are "obvious to all".
She also pointed out that it is hoped that the "Environmental Village" will enhance the harmony between people and nature after its completion and opening, and create a synergistic effect in the area, making it a good place for Tseung Kwan O District.
