The Washington Post revealed that the administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing with its allies for a "prolonged conflict" in Ukraine with its insistence on providing more money and pumping new weapons to Kyiv.
The newspaper quoted a senior official in the US State Department, whose name was not revealed, as saying today that "officials in the administration of Joe Biden discussed the possibility of a long-term conflict with global repercussions even before February," the date of the start of the Russian special military operation to protect Donbass.
The US official admitted that the Biden administration is counting on the possibility that the new weapons directed at Kyiv and the successive waves of sanctions against Russia will make a difference in reaching a final negotiated outcome of the crisis.
The Washington Post considered that Biden's announcement this week of an additional $1 billion in security assistance to Ukraine, the largest tranche of US aid so far, was the latest evidence of Washington's determination to ensure Kyiv survives the battle for the Donbass region.
European countries, including Germany and Slovakia, revealed their own shipments to Ukraine of advanced weapons, including helicopters and multiple launch missile systems.
The newspaper pointed out that the decision to provide Ukraine with advanced weapons such as anti-ship missiles and mobile long-range artillery reflects the increasing risk in Western capitals of an escalation with Russia.
To that, Ivo Daalder, the former US ambassador to NATO, considered that the stalemate on the battlefield leaves the United States with a stark choice: either continue to help Ukraine maintain the potentially bloody status quo with devastating global consequences, or stop the support and allow Moscow to win.
The Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, warned earlier that the continued flow of weapons into Ukraine constitutes a "path to confrontation between Russia and the United States," calling on Washington to stop indulging in the idea of defeating Moscow.
