Sylhet - Bangladesh - Sana
59 people were killed in the monsoon rains that fell on Bangladesh and India and led to floods affecting millions of people.
"Schools have been transformed into emergency shelters to house residents of villages that were submerged within hours after heavy floods," local authorities in Bangladesh told AFP, noting that lightning accompanied the rain and led to dozens of deaths, while others were killed in landslide accidents.
In neighboring Assam, local officials said more than 2.6 million people were affected by the floods after five days of continuous rain, noting that more than four million people were stranded by the floods, in addition to depriving almost the entire region of electricity.
The floods also forced the third international airport in Bangladesh, located in Sylhet, to close since last Friday.
And in India, the Prime Minister of the northeastern state of Meghalaya announced that at least 16 people had died since last Thursday due to landslides and huge floods that inundated roads.
The Meteorological Department predicted that the floods would increase over the next two days due to heavy rains expected in Bangladesh and northeastern India.
