The death toll from floods and landslides in the northeastern state of Assam has risen to 62, the Indian authorities announced today.

And local media quoted the state's emergency management authority as saying in a statement: that eight people were killed during the past 24 hours as a result of floods and landslides in the state, bringing the death toll to 62 since the sixth of last April.

The statement stated that "the floods affected more than three million people, including about 156,300 people who sought refuge in 514 relief camps as a result of the recent floods."

Assam has witnessed heavy rains and floods for six days.

An earlier toll indicated that at least 16 people had died since last Thursday as a result of landslides and massive floods that inundated roads, according to what was announced by the Prime Minister of the northeastern state of Meghalaya.
