Almost everyone loves mangoes, but if you fancy the sweet and delicious fruit - you should think again before you put it in a bag.
Since this is the beginning of the fruit season, its price in the various greengrocers ranges from NIS 49.90 to NIS 69.90 per kilo.
We have not yet found the fruit in the big food chains, but we found it in the "Super Yoda" neighborhood chain for NIS 69.90 per kilo.
As for example prices: at the "Fresh Market" fruit and vegetable website, you can buy a kilo for NIS 49.90, at "Noy Hasadeh" you can find mangoes for NIS 59.90 per kilo and at "Carmela" for NIS 69.90.
It should be noted that in two other greengrocers where we checked the price of the fruit, it was NIS 50 per kilo and NIS 69 per kilo.
And since this is a heavy fruit that can reach about 330 grams per unit, it means that each unit will cost you quite a bit of money.
Elkana Ben Yashar, chairman of the Mango Growers' Table at the Plants Council, explained why fruit prices are high now, and told Israel Today: "Almost every product and fruit is offered in small quantities and its supply is very low, its price is very high.
At the moment the mango is at the very beginning of the season, and the fruit comes from greenhouses and special habitats, whose expenses in these crops are high.
Growing in greenhouses is more expensive than open space, and farmers have to cover the costs. "
Asked when prices will fall, Ben Yashar replied: "I estimate that prices will fall in another month, and maybe less. Large quantities will start pouring into the market, and prices are expected to be dramatically lower. Last year it was the fruit offered at the lowest price in the fruit basket."
