Belarus has so far supported Russia in the Ukraine war, but has not sent any troops of its own.

However, pending maneuvers could be the first step, an expert fears.

Minsk - In the Ukraine conflict, Russian and Ukrainian troops are engaged in heavy fighting, especially in the east of the country.

This map shows where the Ukraine war is raging.

While the West opposes Russian ruler Vladimir Putin's war of aggression, neighboring Belarus under Alexander Lukashenko supports the Russian invasion.

Nevertheless, Lukashenko ruled out intervention by his military several times.

However, the Belarusian army is scheduled to hold military exercises in the Gomel region in the south of the country this month and next.

The exercises were announced in May.

The maneuvers are to be held in the immediate vicinity of the Ukrainian border.

A US expert now fears the worst.

Ukraine-News: Belarusian drills raise 'serious concerns'

Belarus has supported Russia in the escalating Ukraine conflict so far by allowing Russian soldiers to be stationed in Belarus and to mobilize out of the territory.

There hasn't been a troop deployment yet, but that could soon change, according to former US military adviser and military expert Mark Voyger of the Transatlantic Defense and Security Program at the Center for European Analysis.

He assessed the situation to the US magazine

Newsweek

as follows: “These exercises will raise serious concerns.

Unfortunately, Russia and its allies have repeatedly used military exercises to mask their aggression.” This was also the case before the Ukraine war of February 24 of this year and with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. At the time, Western states and institutions were told that the military exercises are related to the Sochi Winter Games.

Later, however, exactly these troops invaded Ukraine.

Ukraine-News: Putin is said to urge Lukashenko to adopt a "more aggressive stance".

Mark Voyger continued his analysis to

Newsweek

: “The concern is that Putin has been trying to put more pressure on Lukashenko, forcing him to take a more aggressive stance and launch more aggression, involving Belarusian troops, from Belarus. "

“Until now we have seen Russian troops in Belarus attacking Ukraine from the north in February.

In this case, however, Russia is suffering from a shortage of troops, so any troops would add to Russian preparedness, especially if they could attack again from the north.

Possibly also with Belarusian troops,” the expert continued.

These troops could prove to be fresh blood for the Russian invasion.

After all, Putin is struggling with problems among his own soldiers.

A lack of troops could also be the reason why the age limit for new recruits in Russia has been lowered and large sums of money are promised for soldiers on deployment.
