2022-06-19T17:53:24.628Z

After the forced corona break, gyms are back in a big way • Significant 11% increase in subscribers compared to pre-epidemic • "There is a longing for gyms and a desire to exercise"

The gym market, which was one of the areas that experienced a dramatic drop at the height of the Corona epidemic, recorded a significant 11% increase in the number of subscribers compared to the pre-Corona period.

This emerges from a new report conducted by Movement through its subsidiary Physical, the platform for managing fitness and sports complexes, which operates in about 40% of gyms, sports clubs and country complexes in Israel. It should be noted that the fitness market fell by 66% The corona.

Prior to the Corona period, until the beginning of 2020, there were almost 700,000 subscribers to gyms in Israel, not including various sports that are performed in the studio or in the open air.

With the onset of the corona plague and the first closure, between April and June 2020, the number of subscribers dropped to only 238,000, a decrease of about two-thirds in the number of subscribers, leading to a major crisis in the industry and demands for compensation for gyms dramatically affected by the closures.

A year later, between April and June 2021, with the recovery of the economy and the exit from the closures, the number of subscribers was about 557,000 people, about 20% fewer subscribers than in the pre-Corona period.

According to Movement, there are currently about 777,000 active subscribers in the gyms, which is an increase of 11% from the pre-Corona period - 83% of the subscribers are men and only 17% women.

Most subscribers are aged 44-25.

The "exploitation" of the appointment to the gym varies between different age groups and genders.

About a third of gym subscribers, 36% of women and 33% of men, exercise only once a week.

"In recent months, with the return to physical work in the workplaces themselves and the decrease in work from home, there has been a 30% increase in the ordering of instructors for sports classes such as yoga, running, Pilates and functional workplaces, large and small, compared to the pre-corona period," explains Daniel Rahum, VP "At the same time, there is a similar expansion of online classes that companies are ordering for employees who still work from home."

Drunk Foundation, CEO of Holmes Place, also notes that there has been an increase in the number of subscribers.

"The proximity to the summer season and the fact that people were closed during the corona at home and could not exercise, created a longing for the gyms and a strong desire to return to the clubs."
