Legislative: how the Nupes became the major opposition force

The Nupes, the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union, has not succeeded in reversing the "natural" course of the presidential election: with 141 seats, according to the latest estimates at 10:30 p.m., Insoumis, Communists, Ecologists and Socialists have not reached the absolute majority – or even relative – which would have allowed Jean-Luc Mélenchon, as the leader of the Insoumis aspired from the evening of the first round of the presidential election, to be “elected” at Matignon.

Another reason for disappointment, the Insoumis are preceded by the RN of Marine Le Pen.

However, for the left, this is not the time for defeat.

In fact, the left alliance is consecrated as the first opposition force to Emmanuel Macron.

The parties composing it have more than doubled their forces, since they only added around sixty elected members to the outgoing Assembly.

Almost mechanical consequence of the number of nominations attributed to each of the four parties of the Nupes, La France Insoumise, the best off in this distribution, imposes itself at the head of the union, with, at 10:30 p.m., 79 elected, (against 17 so far) followed by ecologists (25) who are returning to the Palais-Bourbon and socialists (25).

With 12 elected, the Communists will have to join forces with deputies elected under other labels (like the previous legislature) to form a group (15 at least).

Other trophies on the left's hunting board: several ministers - Amélie de Montchalin, Justine Benin - or figures of the majority - Christophe Castaner, Richard Ferrand - fell in front of candidates from the Nupes.

An obstacle course

On the strength of its score, Nupes and in particular the "leader" of the alliance, France Insoumise, will now have access to all the levers of pressure and counter-power recognized by the Constitution or the regulations of the Assembly. national.

Access to positions of influence, such as sitting in the vice-presidency of the Palais-Bourbon and the questure, or even chairing the very influential finance committee.

La France Insoumise will also be able to seize the Constitutional Council (at least 60 deputies are needed).

But the presidential bloc having only reached a very small majority, the ballot boxes gave above all to the Nupes a preponderant political strike force, of opposition, even of blocking, in the Assembly.

The next five years are shaping up, however, as an obstacle course.

Will unity hold on subjects of divergence, even division, such as security, ecological transition and nuclear power and especially Europe with the elections to the Strasbourg Parliament in 2024?
