Peiting – For weeks, residents in Peiting's town center have been puzzling over what is causing such a horrible stench in the area of ​​the demolished cruiser house.

Now, on Saturday evening, the root of all the stinking evil that was wafting through the place could be found during an extremely unusual operation on Schongauer Straße: In the garage of the former Kreuzerhaus, the firefighters found old kerosene tubs in the attic.

Some of the tarry, horribly smelling contents had dripped through the ceiling onto the floor.

The stench then wafted through the entire town center during the evening operation.

From the beginning: Because the story of the wondrous stench begins two weeks ago.

"We were already there, local residents informed us that it smelled funny," says the Peitinger commander Klaus Straub.

There is nothing unusual about the garage.

The fire service suspects the cause of the stench is a Telekom box next door, something could have burned through here.

But even two weeks later, the thing about the bad smell hasn't left the residents' noses.

In fact, it's almost unbearable.

Once again the fire brigade was alerted.

"The odor was really extreme," says Straub.

A stench reminiscent of kerosene fills the men's nostrils.

Your extraordinary commitment begins at 6:30 p.m.

In the empty garage, the men find a large, black, smelly stain on the floor, about one square meter in size.

"It looked like used oil." The fire brigade first opens the building from below, and later also the roof, so that they can use a camera to see what substances are stored in the attic of the garage.

The area will be locked.

They work in special protective clothing designed to protect the men from chemicals.

“We cleared everything out,” says Straub.

Old oil tanks and old petroleum tanks come out.

A historical edition of the Schongauer Nachrichten from October 13, 1937 is also found - which in turn suggests "that the junk up there has been stored there for at least 80 years," speculates Straub.

Over time, he explains, most of the contents of the cans will have evaporated.

The rusty cans started leaking at some point.

The tar-like contents didn't just drool onto the garage floor.

The wooden beams of the camp are also saturated with the stinking liquid.

The fire brigade wraps the beams.

At the end of the operation, a whole container full of stinking junk came together.

The municipality of Peiting must take care of the disposal of the hazardous waste.

Also around the garage building itself, which had been preserved in the course of the demolition work on the Kreuzerhaus.

The fire brigade only finishes work after six hours

The work of the fire brigade does not end with the clearing out and the removal of the container: After all, cleaning the special protective clothing is extremely time-consuming.

Everything is put back in order and cleared away by 12:30 a.m.

The horrible stench is likely to stay in the noses of the men, but also the residents, for a long time.
