“Congratulations to you for the magnificent campaign that you have done and done”: when Sandrine Rousseau makes a grammar mistake

2022-06-20T16:47:53.968Z

During her evening of victory in the legislative elections, Sandrine Rousseau did inclusive writing with the past participle. A curiosity.

Sunday, June 19, the former candidate for the environmentalist primary for the presidential election and deputy Sandrine Rousseau (Nupes), newly elected to the ninth district of Paris, celebrated her victory in the XIIIth arrondissement of the Capital.

In front of the cameras, then addressing her campaign team, she exclaimed: “Bravo to you for the magnificent campaign that you have done and done!

I can tell you that everyone talks to me about it.

Only here, the sentence is incorrect.

"Done" or "done", you have to choose

The deputy, teacher-researcher and lecturer, made a mistake concerning the agreement of the past participle.

The rule being this: used with the auxiliary «avoir», the participle never agrees with its subject.

It is thus said: "She ate."

However, the participle must agree in gender and number with the direct object when it is placed before the verb.

Example: “The tomatoes we ate.”

It is therefore necessary to choose between the singular or the plural, the feminine or the masculine.

However, as a perfect follower of inclusive writing, a spelling supposed to "ensure gender equality in the French language" (and which some are trying to translate orally), ecofeminist Sandrine Rousseau has tripped over the carpet.

She made the choice... not to choose, in order to thank both her activists, women and men, and therefore, to deconstruct French grammar.

What should she have said?

The participle referring to the complement “campaign”, feminine singular, it would have been necessary to pronounce: “Bravo to you for the magnificent campaign that you made!”
