The city of Montreal was chosen because it is the headquarters of the secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

According to several sources familiar with the matter, its 15th meeting of the parties will take place in the first half of December.

Governments have made a decision on where and when the COP will be held.

Everyone should now focus on the quality of the agreement

” which will be concluded at COP15, hopes Li Shuo of Greenpeace, as a final intermediate session of negotiations opens in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Better protect nature by 2050

This COP15, which some hope will lead to a text as ambitious as the Paris Climate Agreement, was initially scheduled for October 2020 in Kunming, China.

But the Covid-19 came to upset this agenda.

After several failed postponement attempts, it was finally cut in half.

The first part, purely ceremonial, took place in Kunming in October 2021 in a very reduced format.

The second was scheduled for the third quarter in Kunming but China's zero Covid policy made it increasingly unlikely that thousands of delegates, NGO representatives and scientists from around the world would come to the country.

This COP15 biodiversity must set a global framework to better protect nature by 2050, with a stage in 2030. The previous objectives adopted in 2010 for 2020 have not been met and human activities continue to degrade nature, which we yet we depend for needs as essential as drinking water, air or agriculture, at a frantic pace.
