Boris Johnson needed surgery.

The British Prime Minister has undergone routine sinus surgery, a spokesman said.

The operation was performed under general anesthesia.

The Prime Minister was therefore operated on Monday morning in a London clinic.

The operation was carried out by doctors from the National Health Service (NHS).

Johnson was then allowed to leave the clinic and was back in Downing Street at ten o'clock.

Johnson will take a rest day, it said.

The British BBC reports, citing a spokesman, that Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab would have made all urgent decisions in his place.

Probably no connection with previous corona infection

Johnson had been hospitalized for several days in April 2020 as part of an infection with the corona virus, at times also in the intensive care unit.

As Johnson's spokesman Max Blain said, according to the AP news agency, the operation that has now taken place is not related to Covid-19.

The Prime Minister's return to work depends on how he feels.

However, he is expected to chair a meeting of his senior ministers on Tuesday morning.

Later in the week, the 58-year-old Prime Minister is due to travel to Rwanda for a meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government.

At the end of June, the G7 summit in Elmau, Bavaria, and a meeting of the NATO heads of government are also on the agenda.

Johnson surprisingly traveled to Ukraine again at the weekend.

Two by-elections are due in England this week, with Johnson's Tory party at risk of defeat.

After a violent rebellion from within his own ranks during a vote of no confidence, Johnson is politically ailing.

Since the affair about banned lockdown parties in Downing Street, he has been criticized for breaking his own rules and thus the law.
