The Directorate of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Daraa estimated the governorate’s production of red watermelon for the current season at more than 42,000 tons.
The head of the plant production department in the directorate, Eng. Wael Al-Ahmad, told SANA reporter that the area planted with red watermelon reached 698 hectares in the current season, of which 523 hectares are irrigated and the rest is rainfed, indicating that the yield of a dunum in rainfed lands reaches 20 tons per hectare and 75 tons in irrigated lands.
And he indicated that the red watermelon crop was introduced in the markets of Daraa and Damascus as of the middle of last month, as its cultivation is concentrated in all regions of the governorate, especially Tafas, Dael, Nawa and Tel Shehab.
The area planted with the melon crop last season amounted to 865 hectares, of which 675 are irrigated and the rest is rainfed.
