The Indian authorities announced today that the death toll from the eight-day floods and landslides in the northeastern state of Assam has risen to 71.
And local media quoted the state's emergency management authority as saying in a statement, "Nine people died during the past 24 hours as a result of floods and landslides, bringing the death toll from the floods to 71."
"More than four million people were affected by the floods that hit 33 districts in one day," she added.
Assam has witnessed heavy rains and floods since the sixth of last April.
A previous toll had indicated that 62 people had died since April as a result of landslides and huge floods that inundated roads.
