The Fourth Republic died young.
Established in October 1946, this regime collapsed during the crisis of May 1958. The Constitution of the Fourth Constitution sanctioned the omnipotence of the parties.
At the time, the government came from the National Assembly, elected by full proportional representation, and not from the President of the Republic.
The Head of State, appointed by parliamentarians, is confined to a role of representation and influence, which is very real in the case of Auriol.
In economic, social and European matters, the Fourth Republic can be proud of its remarkable record.
